Democrats Continue to Make The Wrong Decision

December 17th, 2024

Earlier today, Democrats elected Gerry O’Connell to be the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee over Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. To be clear, the democrats elected a 74-year old with throat cancer over arguably the party’s best communicator, who over the past 5-6 weeks since the election has been very vocal about how Democrats are missing the mark with voters (She’s 100% spot on). And it appears to be on the backs of Nancy Pelosi.

After the 2024 Election, The Democratic Party was presented with a fork in the road opportunity after losing the House, the Senate, and the Presidency in 2024 to a party that has openly embraced racism, grievance politics, and a track record of screwing over the working class in America. At this crossroads, they have the option to either continue down the same path which will lead to more election losses, more infighting, and a complete erosion of the democratic base.

Or they could take the other road, and change how they operate for the future. Elect younger leadership, promote progressive members, and build a coalition that is made up primarily of working class Americans.

Seems like an easy choice, right? Well, not if you’re the Democratic Party. WIth the news over the last few weeks, it seems as if they are doing things exactly the same, making zero effort to win back voters who either stayed home or voted for republican candidates in the 2024 election.

Democrats have a clear messaging problem. And an age problem.

They nominated an 82 year old for president, rather than hosting an actual primary. Or having any political courage to challenge President Biden. Back in December of 2019, President Biden, while still involved in the Democratic Primary for the 2020 Election, signaled to aides that he would be a one-term president. In hindsight, shortly after the 2022 Midterms, the DNC & Party Leadership should have initiated a conversation with President Biden, that it was time to announce he was not running prior to the end of 2023. This would’ve allowed an open primary, and a younger candidate. All of 2024 could’ve been used to attack Trump’s age & mental fitness, not Joe Biden’s.

Obviously, that didn’t happen. And hindsight is 20/20.

As of December 2024, Democrats had 81 of its 211 members over the age of 65, including 46 between the ages of 70-79, and 12 members over the age of 80. 38% of the party’s representatives in Congress are over 65 years old. How can you be expected to usher in a new generation of leaders, and map out the future of the party when over 1/3 of it’s members are eligible for Social Security and retirement benefits?

But they still haven’t learned their lesson.

The Democratic Party is going to continue to lose on a national scale unless they make some changes. Big changes. This includes shifting to younger leaders with policies that are more populist such as minimum wage, taxing billionaires, universal healthcare, universal childcare, and other populist policies.

Hopefully a new DNC chair in early 2025 will bring some fresh air into the party, but I’m not counting on it.
